Material Costs for Cultured Marble Production
Material cost is one of the most important factors in evaluating the economics of a cultured marble manufacturing operation. In a properly formulated cultured marble matrix, polyester resin represents approximately 25% of the matrix by volume. Despite this relatively small percentage, resin is by far the largest single raw-material expense and should therefore be the starting point when establishing production costs.
Polyester resin pricing varies by market and purchase volume. Worldwide, typical resin pricing falls within the range of $2.00 to $3.50 USD per kilogram. In the United States and Canada, resin is customarily quoted by the pound, with normal market pricing generally ranging from $1.55 to $1.70 USD per pound. Most other international markets quote resin on a kilogram basis. Purchase volume has a significant effect on the final cost. A manufacturer purchasing a full 20-foot container directly from the resin producer will obtain a substantially lower unit cost than a manufacturer purchasing smaller quantities through a distributor.
The remaining approximately 75% of the matrix consists primarily of crushed limestone or calcium carbonate filler. Limestone is an abundant and widely available mineral, making it one of the least expensive components of the formulation in virtually every manufacturing market. Although filler represents the majority of the matrix by volume, its contribution to the overall material cost is relatively small. In a typical formulation, filler accounts for only approximately 10% of the total matrix material cost.
In addition to resin and filler, a complete material-cost calculation must include the various consumables required for production. These include gel coat, which provides the finished surface with a non-porous, stain-resistant barrier; mold-release waxes; tooling clay used to establish radii and transitions; tape used with divider bars; pigments; and other miscellaneous production consumables.
Actual consumable usage varies according to product design, production volume, and manufacturing practices. For estimating purposes, however, an allowance of 20% of the combined resin-and-filler cost provides a reliable and practical representation of these additional material expenses.
